## Description

SGI is the most diverse Buddhist community in the United States, with a global network of over 11 million people in 192 countries and territories. The Soka Gakkai International-USA (SGI-USA) practices Nichiren Buddhism, which emphasizes respect for the dignity of life. At SGI, individual happiness and the realization of peace are intertwined, and members are committed to nonviolence and dialogue. SGI's daily practice involves chanting the phrase Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and reciting portions of the Lotus Sutra to tap into their Buddha nature and apply wisdom, courage, and compassion to their daily lives. They also share the teachings of Buddhism to help others find happiness. In the United States, SGI represents the most diverse Buddhist community, with 2,500 monthly neighborhood discussion meetings and around 90 Buddhist centers across the country. These meetings promote the study of Buddhist principles and allow members to share their experiences of applying Buddhism to life's challenges. SGI engages in various peace activities, including human rights education and efforts to abolish nuclear weapons, based on core Buddhist principles of respecting human dignity and the interconnectedness of self and the environment. SGI upholds the Buddhist tradition founded by Shakyamuni and follows the Mahayana scriptures, particularly the Lotus Sutra. The organization was founded in 1930 as a study group for educators and evolved into a broader movement focused on the ideals and practice of Buddhism. Soka Gakkai International (SGI) was established in 1975 to promote peace, culture, and education through the empowerment of the individual. Under the leadership of Daisaku Ikeda, SGI has become one of the most significant engaged Buddhist movements globally, fostering grassroots activities in areas such as nuclear abolition, human rights, and sustainable living education.
