## Description

Shady.dk is a mapping project that helps people explore where sunlight and shade fall across urban areas. Its ShadyMaps service displays seasonal shadows cast by buildings, including a shadow map for Copenhagen, so residents and businesses can better understand changing sunlight conditions. The shadow paths are calculated using data from Denmark’s elevation model and the Sun’s position, and are shown from sunrise to sunset.

The project is being developed to help answer practical questions, such as which café is currently in the sun, where solar panels might be placed, whether a new building will shade neighbouring properties, and whether a home’s terrace receives enough sunlight. These applications make the maps useful for everyday planning as well as considering the effects of construction.

Shady.dk was developed by Andreas Skielboe and Oliver Lylloff. The project is built with freely available data and open-source software, including Julia, Python, GDAL and SunCalc. Shady.dk presents its work as an evolving resource, with the aim of making information about sunlight and shade more accessible to the public and businesses.
