Established in 1998, the cooperative was formed by eight artists who wanted to market their own work as well as support other local artists. With the opening of their consignment store, the cooperative provided a platform for both fine arts and quality crafts to be showcased and sold. Over the years, the cooperative has not only survived but thrived, attracting visitors and locals alike. The Shelburne Arts Cooperative is more than just an outlet for artwork; it is a close-knit community of artists working together towards financial stability and artistic growth. Operating differently from typical consignment stores, the cooperative has policies such as annual membership dues and a staff comprised of working members who are compensated based on the hours they contribute.
