## Description

Shoreham Bonfire Society was a community-run and community-funded organisation that brought residents together for a family bonfire and fireworks event on Shoreham Beach in Shoreham-by-Sea, Sussex. Formed in 2000 by Jonathan Marshall and a small group of volunteers, it grew into a popular annual gathering, attracting more than 3,500 people in some years. The event was free to the public and supported by local sponsors, suppliers and community members. Alongside providing an evening of family entertainment, the Society raised money for local charities and groups. Beneficiaries included Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice, which received donations, as well as Shoreham community organisations such as the Sea Scouts, Beach Bateria Samba Band and Shoreham Allstars. The Society also shared event news, photo galleries and practical visitor information, including details about access, safety, traders and getting involved. After a two-year break and a review of its finances, Shoreham Bonfire Society announced that it was closing immediately.
