Rather than placing a toddler in front of a screen, the app coaches adults with short video lessons and practical activities to use together at home, for about 15 minutes a day. Its approach draws on strategies used by speech-language pathologists, explaining how and when to apply them as well as why they can help. Developed by bilingual, ASL-fluent speech-language pathologist Marissa Ramos and a multidisciplinary team of early intervention specialists, Sign & Say offers ASL instruction from Deaf early interventionists through a partnership with the REAL Project at Gallaudet University. The program presents signing alongside speech, with strategies that can also be adapted for families raising children in other languages.
