Description
SIL Columbia, also known as Services for Independent Living, is a non-profit Center for Independent Living that aims to promote independence for individuals with disabilities, seniors, and veterans. Operating under the Independent Living Philosophy, SIL offers a range of services to enhance the quality of life for its diverse consumer population. As part of a network of 22 Centers in Missouri, SIL is committed to being consumer-controlled, with at least fifty-one percent of its staff and Board of Directors being individuals with disabilities.
Their community-based programs and supports are designed to increase independence and economic self-sufficiency. SIL serves people with all types of disabilities, regardless of age, and operates as a non-residential facility, focusing on enhancing independence and not owning or managing residential care facilities. Additionally, SIL prides itself on its commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, actively addressing the barriers of systemic racism, discrimination, and oppression.
Established since 1980, SIL has a rich history of promoting equal opportunity and choice for individuals with disabilities, seniors, and their families through their core services that include advocacy, independent living skills, information and referral, peer support, and transition services. Serving a seven-county area in Missouri, SIL provides essential programs and services for youth, adults, and the community
