## Description

SilverSat is a community-based nonprofit in Silver Spring, Maryland, that engages students in grades 6–12 in space exploration and STEM education. Its mission is to raise awareness of space through educational outreach and hands-on participation in designing, building, and launching a CubeSat. The planned satellite is intended to take pictures of Earth and share images and mission data through a social media platform, enabling information to be published and viewed quickly. SilverSat also aims to demonstrate the use of secure, onboard internet protocol communications for sending data directly to that platform.

The organization gives students opportunities to contribute through project teams, including communications, while developing practical knowledge and skills. Its outreach is designed to inspire public interest in aeronautics, space, and science, and to encourage participation in the nation’s space program. SilverSat’s website shares mission information, status updates, educational resources, news, photos, and a calendar. Students, adult leaders, project mentors, sponsors, and the wider community all have a place in the initiative, which connects learning with the collaborative work of developing a CubeSat mission.
