## Description

Nansen Ski Club, founded in Berlin, NH in the late 1800s, is the oldest continuously-run ski club in the United States. Originally named Skiklubben, the club was established by a group of Norwegians who immigrated to the area. It all began with Olaf (Spike) Oleson, who crafted the first pair of skis with steel bindings in New England using pine boards from a local sawmill. The club quickly grew and was renamed The Berlin Mills Ski Club in 1886, after the employer of most of its members. Over the years, the club expanded its activities and changed its name to Nansen Ski Club in honor of the Norwegian explorer Fridtjof Nansen. The club has made significant contributions to the sport, including organizing the first winter carnival in 1922 and constructing The Big Nansen, a 171 ft tall ski jump that was the largest in North America for almost 50 years. Today, Nansen Ski Club continues to promote skiing as a healthy recreational outlet and maintains a network of Nordic ski trails at Milan Hill State Park. With a rich history and dedication to the sport, Nansen Ski Club remains a cornerstone of the skiing community in New Hampshire.
