## Description

Smart Island is an innovative initiative funded by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR) and implemented by the National Research Council's Institute of Applied Sciences (CNR IIA), along with Exalto - Energy & Innovation and ResNova. The project aims to enhance energy, economic, and environmental efficiency in the resource management systems across Italy’s smaller islands, such as Lampedusa, Pantelleria, and the Aeolian Islands. 

Focusing on four key areas: Energy, Mobility, Waste, and Environment, Smart Island promotes the transition to sustainable practices. By advocating for renewable energy sources, the project seeks to reduce the environmental impact caused by traditional diesel systems. Additionally, it supports the development of eco-friendly waste management systems and emphasizes the importance of citizen engagement in these initiatives. The mobility aspect aims to improve transportation through sustainable practices such as electric car-sharing and more bicycle paths, addressing the challenges posed by the seasonal tourist influx. Overall, Smart Island represents a commitment to fostering sustainable development models that can be replicated across various Mediterranean islands.
