SMEX is a non-profit organization that advocates for and advances human rights in digital spaces across the West Asia and North Africa (WANA) region. Our mission is to promote digital rights through research, campaigns, and advocacy. We believe in the transformative power of access to information and self-expression, both online and offline.

Our vision is for everyone in the WANA region and the diaspora to be able to access and engage with the internet, mobile services, and other networked spaces safely and without fear of censorship or surveillance. At SMEX, we have made a significant impact on public discourse in the Arab world with our innovative initiatives. Our research and campaigns have shed light on pressing issues in our digital lives and have been covered by major media outlets in the region.

We work to defend, secure, and expand digital rights through our extensive networks. Our work includes researching internet laws and policies to inform the public about their rights, advocating for an open and secure internet, tracking digital rights violations, and keeping users safe online. We produce localized resources to disseminate best online practices and empower end-users in the WANA region.
