## Description

Picture it. You’re sitting around the dinner table with your family, and then someone brings up the election. On no. Here we go again. Politics.

Politics, religion, and social issues might not belong at the dinner table, but these elements are certainly crucial to our lives. Government and politics affects where and how we can live, how we make and spend money, and what we can do with our lives. Government is what makes living in a society possible, determining how we share and use collective resources, defend ourselves, and work with one another as we try to live happy lives.

Social issues are usually divisive problems in a society. They often arise in times of change (which is all the time), though they might not be dealt with or taken seriously until they reach a point of crisis. Examples of social issues in the US today include gun control and immigration, though worldwide, social issues include women’s rights and environmental protection.

Here on HubPages, you’ll find a community of people like you who are passionate about politics and care deeply about many issues. Join the debate in the Hubpages forums where you can share and defend your opinions.

Here’s just some of what you can do and explore here:

US politics junkie?
Get the scoop on presidents of the past, present (or recent present), and speculate on the ones of the future (like Mark Rubio). Which one do you think was the worst? Read about US controversies and scandals and share your thoughts on them in the forums.

Curious about political science or how the government and economy works?
Read about role of the UN in world government, different kinds of economic systems (like capitalism, socialism, and which one is better), and find out the basics of political science theory and the origin of concepts like countries and governments.

Money, money, money!
Money is part of every society. Learn more about its interaction with the government. For example, how should a government spend tax dollars? If you live in the US, how much money are you paying for welfare? Why are some countries richer than others? How can you help poor people?

Have you had a brush with the justice system?
People have shared their real experiences with crime. Learn what to do if you have a bench warrant, how to survive in jail, and if you’re really at risk for being caught shoplifting after you leave the store.

Looking for a good, (or heartbreaking) true story of crime?
Read about the murder of Nick Markowitz and what really happened or about the first serial killer in America. For something more shocking, read the stories of kids who have killed friends, parents, or siblings.

Interested in learning about crime systems and their victims?
Hear the stories of famous drug kingpins or about Mexican drug cartels and why they exist. For a different kind of systemic crime, read about the causes and possible solutions to corruption.

Love living on earth? Want to make sure it’s a nice place in the future?
Find out about environmental issues and the impact of human behavior on animal species. Learn where some of the dirtiest cities in the world are, and discover ways to help out our planet.

Avoid these topics at dinner with the parents . . . .
Where should society go? Where is it going and what is the best way to help shape it? These are key questions politicians, policymakers, and armchair experts try to answer, like what should the government do about guns, women’s and gay rights, the homeless (who are they anyways), poverty, the wealth gap, or any issue affecting economy, culture, or health.

And now for some foreign policy.
You don’t have to be a political scientist to read up on the issues or form your own opinions. How should your country interact with others? What is the best way to manage terrorism or participate in the global economy? What is the best way to determine whether or not a country is developed—should it be the GDP or something else?

What do you think about national defense?
Are you thinking about joining the army? Read from someone who’s done it first. Learn about what it’s like to be a woman in the air force or how to manage if your son or daughter is going through training.

Let your freak flag fly.
Part of the fun of being in a society is finding a tribe of people who share your interests, worldview, or quirky habits. They could be people who don’t feel the need to wear clothes, who believe in the power of the flower, or those who have a unique fashion sense. You can also find community with those who share your gender, sexual orientation, religion, regional background, or what you call yourself.

Bring your thoughts to the forum.

Part of being in a society is engaging in friendly debate at the neighborhood internet forum. Share your opinions, thoughts, and perspectives on the issues that matter to you with people, like you, who are passionate about many issues.
