Since its establishment in 2006, SOID has been dedicated to providing education and support to the children of Veal Village, as well as helping the impoverished in Cambodia. With the financial assistance from SOID Nederland and SOID België, the organization has made significant progress over the past 15 years. SOID focused its efforts on a group of over 100 extremely poor families living in slums in Siem Reap, an important city in Cambodia known for its historic temples. They built a fully functional primary school where approximately 140 children received education. They also sponsored continued education for eligible children in state schools. Additionally, they provided food aid to the families and offered medical and financial assistance in times of sickness and adversity. Unfortunately, recent events have posed great challenges for SOID. Their school was taken away due to the land being used as collateral for a bank loan, and the slums where the SOID families lived were cleared for urban development. The families were relocated to a remote area with no facilities, and the ownership of the allocated land became uncertain. The situation has made it difficult for SOID to track and support students and families, which has raised concerns among sponsors and monitoring authorities. SOID Nederland and SOID België have come together to assess the situation and determine the best course of action within the framework of their respective statutes. Despite the uncertainties, the organization remains committed to finding solutions to continue their vital work in supporting education and assisting vulnerable communities in Cambodia.
