## Description

Founded in 2018 by Associate Professor Murad Tayebjee, Spectre Research is a UNSW team of scientists, engineers and educators focused on understanding, developing and explaining renewable energy technologies. Its work brings together three areas: spectroscopy, renewable energy and education.

In spectroscopy, the team investigates how light interacts with matter, supporting advances in technologies such as solar cells, lighting, sensors and biomedical imaging. Its research uses techniques including ultrafast laser spectroscopy and magnetic resonance, with experiments that apply large magnetic fields to study electronic states.

Spectre Research also designs renewable energy devices, with a particular focus on next-generation solar cells. One project is a singlet-fission silicon tandem device developed in collaboration with Omega Silicon, supported by funding from several ARENA projects.

In education, the team develops learning approaches for undergraduate and high school students. With Lionsheart Studios, it created PlayEnergy, an energy-focused module integrated into the Playconomics multiplayer online game. The module combines engineering and social sciences to help students explore sustainable energy systems, thermodynamics and economic principles.
