Space Studies Institute (SSI) is a non-profit organization established in 1977 by Professor Gerard K. O’Neill. The institute is dedicated to opening up the vast resources of space for human settlement within our lifetime.

Their mission is to bridge the technological gaps required for the productive utilization of space resources. SSI conducts and supports both theoretical and experimental research related to energy and material resources in space and their impact on improving the human condition. They achieve this by funding and collaborating with selected colleges, universities, and scientific institutions.

SSI also aims to educate the public about the potential of space resources in solving environmental and energy challenges. Their programs include transport mechanisms, materials processing and production, and material sources. Notably, SSI has pioneered the design of large space habitats and solar power satellites, emphasizing the use of lunar materials.
