Working with NGO partners, it tracks commercial banks’ support for coal and helps the public understand how financial institutions are responding to climate commitments. Its Still Banking on Coal project analyses almost 650 commercial banks, documenting loans and underwriting provided to coal companies since 2022. An online data tool lets users explore the findings and see where their bank stands, while accompanying briefings explain differences between banks moving away from coal and those continuing to finance it. The research draws on Urgewald’s Global Coal Exit List, a public database covering almost 3,000 companies across the thermal coal value chain, including mining, trading, transport, coal-fired power generation and equipment manufacturing.
