## Description

St. John’s Cemetery, Inc. owns and operates St. John’s Cemetery, a historic burial ground in downtown Frederick, Maryland, located between East 3rd and 4th Streets. First used in 1832 and officially established in 1845, the cemetery is open to people of all faiths and welcomes visitors during daylight hours.

The cemetery offers in-ground gravesites for the permanent repose of human remains, although availability is very limited. Its 405-niche columbarium, added in 2019, provides a permanent resting place for cremated remains and is open to everyone. The organization says all remains are treated with respect and reverence in keeping with its faith tradition.

St. John’s is also a place of historical interest and the final resting ground of early settlers, Jesuits, Civil War soldiers, French settlers, and notable figures including Maryland Governor Enoch Louis Lowe and Father John McElroy, founder of St. John’s Literary Institute and Boston College. For burial information, visitors may leave a voicemail for a board member.
