## Description

Storied Colors is an independent color-history catalogue documenting named colors through their origins, chemistry, and cultural histories. Its ongoing index brings together 252 catalogued specimens, supported by more than 1,162 citations. Each entry traces a color’s provenance, including where its pigment was first made, how it was used, and, where relevant, the hazards, restrictions, or substitutions associated with it. The catalogue presents both celebrated stories and less flattering details, and updates older entries as conservation research yields corrections.

Visitors can browse colors by name, year, origin, hexadecimal value, or chemistry, and explore a daily featured color alongside the curator’s weekly selection and recent additions. Entries span natural and synthetic pigments, minerals, dyes, and glazes, with examples such as cadmium yellow, carmine, celadon, and YInMn blue. Storied Colors also shares methodology and curator’s notes, and offers an occasional email newsletter featuring new entries and subjects that do not fit a single color page. New entries are published each Sunday at 06:00 GMT.
