## Description

South Texas Coffee Initiative is a Texas-based project investigating whether commercial coffee cultivation can succeed in the Lower Rio Grande Valley and South Florida. Founded in 2020 by John Anderson, who has a horticulture degree, the initiative began with the goal of growing coffee in Texas. After several pivots and setbacks, its focus shifted from growing coffee directly to making coffee plants available to others. The project works with a third party to propagate imported plants and aims to offer them in commercial quantities to farmers in Texas and Florida, supporting agricultural opportunities in both states. Its site shares information about the mission, the founder, and the project’s development, including a visit to CATIE in Costa Rica, where Anderson met people connected with the imported plants. Visitors can explore the initiative’s about page and follow its updates on Instagram and Twitter. The South Texas Coffee Initiative presents itself as an American coffee brand centered on testing a new crop for regional agriculture and helping farmers access plants for potential commercial cultivation.
