## Description

The SUAQ Orangutan Program is a research and conservation initiative focused on Sumatran orangutans and their habitat at the Suaq Balimbing monitoring station in Sumatra, Indonesia. It is run by the Development and Evolution of Cognition Research Group at the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior in Germany and Universitas Nasional in Indonesia, in cooperation with other research institutions. The station is operated by Yayasan Ekosistem Lestari and its Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme.

SUAQ studies orangutan behavior and biology, including cognition, social life and reproductive biology. Its research aims to identify the species’ needs and support more effective conservation, while also offering insights into human evolutionary history. The program works to protect the Suaq forest, a key habitat known for its high orangutan density and distinctive behaviors, including tool use. Its conservation approach includes cooperation with local communities, education projects and local employment. SUAQ also invites public donations to help sustain its research and conservation activities.
