## Description

Summerhill is an independent alternative school in Suffolk, England, founded by A.S. Neill to create an educational environment that fits the child rather than imposing a conventional model. Its approach centres on self-directed learning, free play, personal freedom, democratic self-government, and social and emotional development. The school aims to support children’s well-being, individuality, equality, and independence within a close-knit community. Learning is shaped by pupils’ interests, while community life includes shared responsibilities, events, trips, games, and opportunities to participate in committees and decision-making. Summerhill presents itself as a real, lived-in school community rather than an idealised utopia, and its educational philosophy has influenced schools and universities internationally. Families can explore enrolment information, request a prospectus, and arrange visits for prospective parents. The website also shares school news, information about its history and philosophy, and resources on topics such as play and parenting. Related organisations include A.S. Neill Summerhill CIC, which promotes children’s rights and well-being, and the A.S.
