Terres australes et antarctiques françaises (TAAF) is a brand that encompasses five districts: Crozet Islands, Kerguelen Islands, Saint-Paul and Amsterdam Islands (known as the Austral districts), Adélie Land in Antarctica, and the Scattered Islands. These islands, along with their associated exclusive economic zone, make up over 20% of the French maritime territory, establishing France as a leading maritime power. While the TAAF have no permanent population or elected officials, they are under the authority of a prefect who oversees all public actions.

The administration is responsible for sovereign missions, supporting scientific research, preserving biodiversity, and logistics. To fulfill these diverse roles, TAAF operates a complex logistical network, relying on their supply ship, Le Marion Dufresne, and polar icebreaker, L'Astrolabe.
