Tartan Dictionary is an early-stage project dedicated to supporting the living Scottish Celtic tartan tradition. It helps visitors understand tartan patterns, explore their history, trace family and clan connections, and find ways to create or acquire a tartan. Unlike catalogues that identify cloth by name or exact thread counts, the site focuses on the underlying design, treating related weavings across different periods and mills as expressions of one pattern. Its resources include a searchable Tartan Register, a colour dictionary, historical context, and curated references to tartan sources, designers, and suppliers. Visitors can browse patterns, investigate how family tartans have changed over generations, and use the in-browser TTD navigator to weave tartans and compare them with existing designs. A logo-matching tool also identifies tartans closest to uploaded logos or brand colours. The site presents an evolving account of tartan’s spread across Scotland and explains the tradition’s origins. Its planned resources include a public guide to weavers and makers, with the aim of helping people obtain their own tartan.
