## Description

The Tehran Convention, officially known as the Framework Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea, represents a pivotal legal agreement aimed at safeguarding the Caspian Sea's environment. Adopted in 2003 by Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Turkmenistan, this convention emerged from a concerted effort to address the environmental challenges faced by the region, particularly after the Soviet Union's collapse. Central to its mission is the prevention of pollution and the conservation of biodiversity within the Caspian Sea ecosystem. 

The Convention underpinning projects supports several protocols, including those focused on biological diversity conservation and pollution reduction from land-based sources. To facilitate cooperation, the Caspian Environment Programme (CEP) was established, promoting sustainable development and environmental monitoring. Managed by the UN Environment Programme, the Tehran Convention not only establishes foundational legal frameworks but also encourages partnerships and enhanced communication among the littoral states to ensure the health of this critical regional resource.
