## Description

Sternwarte Lilienthal, home of TELESCOPIUM-Lilienthal, brings the region’s rich astronomical heritage to life through a historically inspired observatory and visitor experience. The project is supported by the Astronomische Vereinigung Lilienthal e.V. (AVL), a nonprofit association founded in 2000 to preserve the legacy of astronomer Johann Hieronymus Schroeter and promote interest in astronomy among children, young people and adults.

Its centerpiece is a faithful reconstruction of Schroeter’s 27-foot Newtonian reflecting telescope, originally built in 1793. The instrument has a 50-centimetre mirror and an eight-metre focal length, and combines historically informed design with modern construction and safety adaptations. Visitors can learn how astronomers observed the sky more than 200 years ago and, during suitable visits, look through the telescope themselves. Because of local light pollution, observations focus mainly on the solar system, including the Moon, planets and Sun.

TELESCOPIUM-Lilienthal offers visitor information, reserved visits and school visits, alongside educational resources about astronomy, the solar system and Schroeter’s history. Its program connects historical science with an engaging experience for all ages.
