## Description

Athena X-ray Observatory, an initiative launched by the European Space Agency (ESA), is a groundbreaking open X-ray observatory selected in June 2014 as part of the Cosmic Vision program. Designed to explore the "Hot and Energetic Universe," Athena offers unparalleled capabilities with a high-performance telescope that utilizes innovative Si pore optics. This advanced technology allows for exceptional survey capabilities, energy resolution, and a wide range of astrophysical investigations.

The observatory is equipped with two primary instruments: the Wide Field Imager (WFI), which provides sensitive imaging and spectroscopy, and the X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU), which offers high-resolution spectroscopy over a sizeable field of view. With these tools, Athena aims to investigate phenomena such as black hole accretion, the hot gas surrounding galaxy clusters, supernova remnants, and exoplanet atmospheres.

Athena operates in synergy with other large observatories and is poised to transform our understanding of the universe when it begins its mission in the latter half of the 2030s.
