## Description

Lyric Theater Miami is a historic venue that has been a centerpiece of black entertainment in Miami since 1913. Built, owned, and operated by Geder Walker, a black man from Georgia, this 400-seat theater quickly became a symbol of black economic influence and cultural pride within Overtown. Described by the Miami Metropolis newspaper as possibly the most beautiful and costly playhouse owned by Colored people in all the Southland, the Lyric Theater served as a social gathering place free of discrimination. Today, the Lyric Theater is under the umbrella of The Black Archives History and Research Foundation of South Florida, Inc., a non-profit organization founded by Dr. Dorothy Jenkins Fields in 1977. As a national resource for African American history, the Black Archives preserves a vast collection of materials that scholars, students, teachers, and the community can access. They also offer the opportunity to rent the venue for various events. Located at 819 NW Second Ave. Miami, FL 33136, Lyric Theater Miami is a historic gem that continues to embrace and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the black community in Miami.
