The group originated from an InfoTrends conference, where a Microsoft executive discussed the concept of live pixels on screens and dead pixels in print. Inspired by this idea, the Dead Pixels Society was established and made its first appearance at the 2009 6Sight Future of Imaging Conference.

This exclusive conference, sponsored by PMA International, catered to industry executives. Today, the Dead Pixels Society continues to convene at industry events and conferences, easily identifiable by their distinct lapel pins. The group is guided by an advisory board composed of industry leaders.
