The Eyeopener is an independent student newspaper that has been serving Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University) since 1967. Owned and operated by Rye Eye Publishing Inc., a non-profit corporation led by TMU students, The Eyeopener was created to give the students a strong voice on campus. Starting from humble beginnings—a broom-closet office in Oakham House and later a small basement office in Jorgenson Hall—we have grown exponentially and now have our headquarters on the second floor of the Student Campus Centre. Our commitment to representing student perspectives remains unwavering, and we aim to continue doing so for decades to come. To sustain our operations and costs, most TMU students contribute towards a levy, and we have a dedicated constitution and board. Our masthead and staff members are compensated for their work, and we are a member of the Canadian University Press, for which we pay an annual membership fee. We value accountability and encourage you to reach out to us with any questions, concerns, or inquiries about our publication.
