## Description

The Independent is Newfoundland and Labrador's leading source for progressive news and analysis, founded in 2011 as a grassroots online publication. Rising from the remnants of a prior print newspaper, it quickly gained support from dedicated contributors and a loyal readership who recognized its vital role in providing independent media. The Independent operates as a not-for-profit media collective, distinguishing itself by rejecting corporate funding and focusing on accessible, public-service journalism. Renowned for its powerful investigative reporting, The Independent covers a spectrum of topics, including politics, social justice, and Indigenous rights, making notable contributions to the protest movements in the region. The publication also highlights Newfoundland and Labrador’s vibrant arts scene and offers a rich commentary section, enriching public discourse. With an impressive array of awards and accolades, including multiple Atlantic Journalism Awards, The Independent champions decolonization and diversity of perspectives while nurturing community engagement through newsletters and podcasts. It stands as a beacon of journalistic integrity and resilience in the ever-evolving media landscape.
