## Description

Thelma Mäkikyrö Foundation is a northern Finnish grant-making foundation established in 2006 by Oulu dentist Thelma Iiris Mäkikyrö to support cancer research. It is a nonprofit organization and does not conduct commercial business. Since its founding, the foundation has awarded grants each year to advance cancer research and the development of treatments, with a particular focus on researchers and research carried out in northern Finland. Its support includes research grants for individual researchers and research groups, as well as travel grants; it may also make donations to organizations and projects that further its purpose. The foundation’s board makes funding decisions based on applications reviewed by an assessment committee. It requires grant recipients to report on research progress or the use of funds. The foundation also invites individuals and organizations to contribute through donations and bequests, and says funds raised are used to finance medical research into cancer. Through its grants and fundraising, the foundation helps sustain regional research and has supported dozens of projects, contributing approximately one million euros to cancer research over its lifetime.
