Southern Illinoisan is a brand that provides valuable and immersive cultural experiences to students from Japan. Through their Cultural Immersion Program, offered by the Center for English as a Second Language (CESL) at SIU, students have the opportunity to study American culture and English. The program includes English language instruction as well as various activities and events that allow students to engage with American society.

Students attend City Council meetings, meet local dignitaries, participate in sports events, and celebrate important milestones in Carbondale's history. They also engage in community service, volunteering at organizations like Green Earth and community kitchens. The program aims to provide a holistic learning experience, combining language skills with an in-depth understanding of American culture.

Students are encouraged to participate in activities beyond the required hours, allowing for further immersion in the local community. By the end of the program, students are able to earn credits and reflect on their experiences through a paper on their time in the United States.
