## Description

Thom “Tex” Wheeler is a painter and sculptor based in Taos, New Mexico, whose art reflects a joy of living, optimism, and an enduring interest in history and culture. Born in Alice, Texas, he began his art career in Houston, creating monumental sculptures in stone, wood, and metal for clients across the United States. After moving to Taos in 1985, he developed a distinctive Southwestern approach, making wall sculptures from aluminum, bronze, and copper, often embellished with semi-precious stones. His work also includes paintings, crosses, abstracts, and enameled copper pieces. Wheeler paints in oils with a palette knife, using thick, saturated colors and textured surfaces that echo his metalwork. Religious themes are prominent, often blending Southwestern and Native American imagery with symbols from other traditions. His work has appeared in public and private collections, galleries, and exhibitions. The Thom Wheeler Studio Gallery in Taos welcomes visitors, and his art is represented by galleries in Taos, Sedona, Ruidoso, and Boerne, Texas. The website also features a Casa Wheeler guest house.
