## Description

Toponomasticon Hispaniae is a research and public-information project dedicated to the study of place names across Spain and Portugal. Its current phase, “Prolongation of Anthroponymy and American Projection,” continues work begun in 2021–2025 and examines how Hispanic place names have influenced personal names, especially surnames, and how they appear in Hispanic America. More than 60 researchers from European and American universities contribute through three research teams and several regional subprojects, covering the Iberian Peninsula’s diverse linguistic areas.

The project’s central resource is a searchable collection of toponymic records for selected place names. Each record brings together geographic, historical, ethnographic, cartographic and linguistic information, including pronunciation, etymology, naming motivation, semantic classification, related forms and false cognates. Entries also document associated demonyms, surnames and personal names, with geographic mapping. Linked etymological records trace the development of name origins across different territories, while connections to cited bibliography and documentary sources support further research.
