## Description

TRAMIL is an interdisciplinary research program focused on traditional medicinal plant use in Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and other Caribbean countries. Created through collaboration among regional organizations, medical and research institutions, and rural associations, it aims to improve and rationalize popular health practices based on medicinal plants. Its mission is to scientifically validate traditional uses for primary health care, while its broader vision is to identify, assess, and share plant-based practices relevant to public health.

The program studies how communities use medicinal plants through participatory ethnopharmacological surveys. These surveys begin with health symptoms and people’s understanding of them, then examine the plants used in response. TRAMIL also conducts research into the quality, safety, and effectiveness of medicinal plants, and provides resources through its TRAMILibrary, plant information, and coverage of health problems. Its activities include workshops, publications, research, and the dissemination of findings. By connecting popular knowledge with scientific evaluation, TRAMIL supports informed consideration of traditional medicine within primary health care.
