TWAS

TWAS, also known as The World Academy of Sciences, is a prestigious organization dedicated to advancing science in developing countries. Founded in 1983 by a distinguished group of scientists, including Nobel laureate Abdus Salam, TWAS believes that by strengthening science and engineering, developing nations can tackle crucial challenges such as poverty, disease, and hunger. Based in Trieste, Italy, TWAS has over 1,200 elected fellows from more than 100 countries, 11 of whom are Nobel laureates.

The Academy's mission is to recognize and promote excellence in scientific research, support young scientists in developing countries, foster global cooperation in science and technology, and encourage research on pressing issues faced by developing nations. TWAS achieves these goals through various programs, including fellowships, grants, awards, and support for regional and international science meetings. As a program unit of UNESCO, TWAS receives funding from the Italian Government and collaborates closely with organizations like The Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World and The InterAcademy Partnership.
