## Description

Tynehead Hatchery is a public salmon hatchery operated by the Serpentine Enhancement Society, a volunteer-led organization established in the early 1980s to help rehabilitate the Serpentine River’s salmon run. Built in 1988, the hatchery includes facilities for fish rearing, education and research, and continues to rely on community involvement to support its work.

The hatchery raises and releases Chinook, chum and Coho salmon, as well as steelhead, with trout occasionally found in the river. Volunteers monitor eggs and young fish, check water temperature and flow, and help maintain healthy pond habitat. The facility’s work includes releasing salmon into the Serpentine and encouraging the fish to survive in the wild and return in future years.

Tynehead Hatchery is open to the public and offers opportunities to learn about Pacific salmon and river conservation. Visitors can explore hatchery information and self-guided resources, while groups can inquire about field trips. The society also welcomes volunteers interested in hands-on experience, environmental education and salmon habitat restoration, and accepts donations to support its activities.
