## Description

Ukrainian History Global Initiative (UHGI) is a UK-registered charitable foundation and collaborative history project led by historian Timothy Snyder. It aims to develop a new empirical and conceptual understanding of the deep history of the lands of contemporary Ukraine and the peoples who have lived there. Rather than treating Ukrainian history as a separate national narrative, UHGI examines its connections with global history through thematic, interdisciplinary research. Historians work alongside specialists in fields including archaeology, paleontology, zoology and natural history, drawing on new technologies and methods.

The initiative supports scholars researching roughly seventy themes and encourages collaboration through funded workshops and conferences. Its scope ranges from the earliest periods of human and cultural development to the Russo-Ukrainian war, with attention to Ukraine’s role in wider political, economic and cultural transformations. UHGI seeks to produce rigorous scholarship that is also accessible to general readers. Participants receive research, translation and editing support and are expected to develop long, medium and short versions of their work.
