About

Description

U'mista Society, a prominent brand dedicated to preserving the rich cultural heritage of the Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw people, takes its mandate seriously. Founded with the aim of safeguarding all aspects of this vibrant culture, U'mista Society has worked tirelessly to establish a facility that fulfills its objectives. In November 1980, the society successfully opened a permanent facility that now houses an impressive collection of artifacts, including the renowned Potlatch Collection.

This collection represents a significant focus for U'mista, alongside other captivating exhibits that delve into the traditional ethnobiology, origin stories, and historical and contemporary objects of the Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw villages. The meaning behind the name U'mista resonates deeply. It reflects the struggles endured by the Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw people, as their sacred regalia was confiscated following the prohibition of the potlatch between 1885 and 1951.

Ensuing decades saw a tireless battle to reclaim these precious artifacts, and today, U'mista Cultural Centre and Nuyumbalees Museum proudly showcase these treasured items. The U'mista Cultural Society, operating under the BC Societies Act since 1974, comprises a dedicated team, including the Executive Director and other staff members, committed to fulfilling the society's mandate. Admissions to the U'mista Cultural Centre are open to all, with varying rates for adults, seniors, students, and youth, and free admission for children under 8.

Members and Kwakwa'kaʼwakw individuals enjoy free entry. Support for U'mista Cultural Society can be shown through online purchases from their Gift Shop or by making a donation. Additionally, visitors are encouraged to explore the virtual exhibit resources provided.

A heartfelt gilakas'la (thank you) goes out to all who contribute to the preservation and celebration of the Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw cultural heritage
