## Description

UNEP/GRID-Sioux Falls is the North American node of the United Nations Environment Programme’s Global Resource Information Database. Based at the U.S. Geological Survey’s Earth Resources Observation and Science Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, it has operated since 1991 as a partnership between UNEP and USGS. The wider UNEP works to assess the state of the global environment, track environmental trends, provide early warnings of threats, and advise governments and the United Nations using scientific and technological expertise.

GRID-Sioux Falls shares environmental information and research through publications, data, multimedia, and online resources. Its work includes atlases, assessments, and guides that help communicate environmental conditions and change. Featured topics include Africa’s energy resources and mountain regions, wetlands in Kenya, environmental change across the Arab region, and the potential effects of Ethiopia’s Gibe III Dam on Lake Turkana. The site also presents environmental hotspots and updated locations around the world. By combining maps, satellite imagery, photographs, data, and analysis, GRID-Sioux Falls supports informed understanding of environmental issues and their development implications.
