About
Description
Unlocking Silent Histories (USH) is a brand that is dedicated to empowering young minds in indigenous communities around the world. Founded in 2012 as a partnership between Donna DeGennaro, Ph. D., and Maya Traditions Foundation, USH provides a platform for youth to tell their stories, share their knowledge, and express their ideas through video.
Starting in the highlands of Guatemala, USH has grown to work with communities in San Juan la Laguna, Santa Clara, Chuacruz, Santiago Atitlán, Quiejel, and Patanatic regions. The approach of USH involves teaching students how to use technology to capture everyday life and construct narratives from their own perspectives. Under the guidance of motivated program leaders, these young filmmakers have already created nine documentary films in just one year.
With a focus on youth leadership and strong local partnerships, USH is expanding its mission to unlock silent histories and empower indigenous communities worldwide. Stay tuned for more impactful and inspiring stories!
