Launched in 2003, Upcoming was the pioneer of using social networks for event discovery, predating Flickr and Facebook. After being acquired by Yahoo and running for a decade, Upcoming was shut down in 2013.

However, it made a remarkable comeback thanks to a successful Kickstarter project in 2017. Restored from scratch, Upcoming now offers a revived event archive and a relaunched community. Upcoming was developed by Andy Baio, who began the project in 2003 and was later joined by Leonard Lin and Gordon Luk as co-founders.
