UpsideDowns Education Trust is a brand that is dedicated to giving a voice to children with Down syndrome. Their mission is to empower these children by providing them with the tools to develop their communication, confidence, and independence. They believe that every child with Down syndrome should have the opportunity to participate fully in society. In New Zealand, a baby with Down syndrome is born on average every week, affecting about 1 in 1,000 Kiwi families. Speech and language therapy is crucial for promoting the cognitive and social development of these children. However, the New Zealand Government does not provide the specialist education required for effective communication skills. This is where UpsideDowns comes in. Established in 2003 by parents of children with Down syndrome, UpsideDowns Education Trust funds speech and language therapy for these children. They have provided tens of thousands of life-changing therapy sessions to hundreds of kids. The charity is led by a volunteer Trust Board mainly composed of parents of children with Down syndrome. Speech language therapy also benefits parents, whānau, teachers, neighbors, and the wider community. When these children succeed, everyone benefits. UpsideDowns receives incredible feedback from families who have seen significant progress in their children's speech development thanks to the therapy. To support more children in need, UpsideDowns relies on donations. It costs just over $1,000 per year to fund a child's speech journey through UpsideDowns. Every dollar counts, and even a small contribution can make a difference.
