About

Description

Urbano is a creative home for a community of intergenerational artists. Their cohort includes practicing teaching artists, youth artists, arts administrators, and individuals who defy category – all working together to support one another through mentorship, artistic exploration, and public presentations of their work. As a nonprofit organization, Urbano brings together practicing visual artists, local youth, and community members to learn and experiment through place-based projects.

They foster public and participatory art as a means for personal transformation, community cohesion, and social change. Urbano's projects consist of Artists in Residence, Youth Projects, Apprentices, and Workshops, all revolving around an annual curatorial theme. They promote artistic expansiveness, blurring boundaries between art and everyday life.

Their philosophy encourages artists to actively engage in conversations with the community, addressing current social issues through creative expression. Founded in 1986 as The Space, an artist-run gallery and public art incubator, Urbano has since evolved and expanded its impact. Over the years, they have partnered with youth and community-serving arts organizations, offering innovative programming and opportunities for collaboration between young people, community members, and contemporary artists.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Urbano made the decision to operate virtually and collaborate with other organizations while continuing to push their artistic expansiveness philosophy. They believe in creating projects beyond the studio's walls and in the communities they serve. Join Urbano in their mission to make people think about their lives and the impact they want to have through art
