## Description

Urban Rivers is an organization dedicated to transforming city waterways into wildlife sanctuaries and creating stronger connections between communities and nature. Working with the City of Chicago’s Department of Planning and Development, community groups, businesses, universities, and scientific institutions, it combines ecological restoration, research, and public engagement.

Its flagship project, the Wild Mile, is an in-progress, mile-long floating park on the North Branch Canal of the Chicago River, beside Goose Island. Designed with floating gardens, public walkways, and kayak docks, the Wild Mile serves as a public park, botanical garden, open-air museum, community classroom, and habitat for native wildlife. Urban Rivers also features projects including Bubbly Creek and Prologis River Park.

The organization offers opportunities to visit, volunteer, attend events, and support its work through donations. Volunteers can help maintain the Wild Mile, monitor wildlife, and collect research data; River Rangers receive training in citizen science and kayaking safety. Urban Rivers also shares educational resources, research, news, and community updates, using science to guide restoration efforts and encourage thoughtful, lasting stewardship of urban waterways.
