Description

UT-Battelle is a private not-for-profit company established in 2000 with the purpose of managing and operating the renowned Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) for the U. S. Department of Energy.


Formed through a partnership between the University of Tennessee (UT) and Battelle Memorial Institute, UT-Battelle is responsible for delivering the Department of Energy's research mission at ORNL. Both UT and Battelle are dedicated to enhancing ORNL's leadership in scientific research, laboratory operations, and community service. As ORNL's largest research partner, UT strengthens the Laboratory's partnerships among state and regional stakeholders.


UT-Battelle places great emphasis on promoting science education and has donated more than $8 million to regional outreach initiatives. Battelle, a well-established 7,500-person R&D organization founded in 1929, manages or co-manages several other major research facilities and conducts numerous research projects for government and industrial clients. The University of Tennessee, established in 1794, is a critical research institution within the UT System.


UT-Battelle has managed ORNL since 2000, marking over 50 years of collaboration with Oak Ridge. The University of Tennessee and ORNL jointly operate several research institutes focused on areas such as bioenergy, computational sciences, and advanced materials
