## Description

The Van Heerden Family Tree Project is a South African genealogy resource devoted to documenting the history and descendants of the Van Heerden family. Its central story begins with Pieter Willemsz van Heerden, born in 1677 in Heerde, Gelderland, in the Netherlands. He arrived at the Cape in 1701 after sailing from Vlissingen aboard the Popkensburg, completed five years of service with the Dutch East India Company, and later settled as a farmer at Weltevreden in the Tulbagh area. In 1708, he married Magtilt van der Merwe. Together, they became the founding ancestors of the Van Heerden family in South Africa. The project explains how their family line continued through their eldest son, Willem, and his nine sons, associated with nine branches of the family tree. Visitors can explore a surname list and family-history information drawn from a collection that records more than 40,000 names and 15,000 families, including information on living people. The site also shares historical background on the family’s origins and development.
