About

Description

VARHA | Franklin PA, also known as the Venango Area Riding for the Handicapped Association, has been dedicated to providing therapeutic horseback riding for individuals with special needs since its establishment in March of 1980. Founded by Dr. Louis and Mary Wagner, VARHA was inspired by their daughter Amy, who was wheelchair-bound due to Polio.

Initially, the therapy classes took place at a horse owner's farm in Rocky Grove, with Amy riding the horse named 'Chubby'. As VARHA expanded, the classes relocated to the Venango County 4-H Fairgrounds. Riding sessions were conducted both indoors in Phillips Arena and outdoors on the fairgrounds.

Over the years, VARHA has undergone significant growth. In 1994, they acquired 40 acres of land, where they built a 13-stall barn, an outdoor arena, and later, an indoor insulated arena with additional facilities. In 2012, an 8.

14-acre plot was purchased to accommodate outdoor riding trails and hay production. Moreover, VARHA has extended its services to various segments of the community. They now offer therapeutic riding programs for families in drug and alcohol treatment, mental health treatment, 'at risk' youth, and young riders with special needs.

They also run a 'Horses for Healing' program that aids military veterans and adults who have undergone life-changing traumas. As a result of their continuous efforts, VARHA has become a prominent contributor to the well-being of its community members
