## Description

Veliero is a Dutch maritime-history project exploring the country’s sailing heritage through the story of the VOC ship Westerbeek. Its name is the Italian word for “sailing ship,” reflecting the focus on the vessels and crews that helped shape Dutch history and prosperity. The site places the Westerbeek within the VOC’s nearly 200-year period of overseas trade, when thousands of ships sailed between the Netherlands and destinations across Africa, Asia, and Oceania.

Built in 1722 for the Amsterdam Chamber, the Westerbeek was a 650-ton ship with a crew of 120 to 160. It left Texel for Batavia in 1740 and was wrecked off the Faroe Islands in September 1742 while returning home. Of the 91 crew members, 80 survived; some were taken to mainland Europe, while others spent the winter on the islands before being rescued in June 1743. Veliero shares this historical account and offers a book about the Westerbeek, a ballad, and an option to order the ballad. The site is associated with Martha Reijmers.
