## Description

Ossuaire de Douaumont is a memorial sanctuary in Douaumont, in France’s Meuse region, dedicated to the soldiers who died in the 1916 Battle of Verdun. The battle lasted 300 days and nights, and around 300,000 French and German soldiers lost their lives. Many of the dead could not be identified or recovered, inspiring the creation of the ossuary as a place of remembrance for unknown soldiers. Today, the monument welcomes visitors seeking to learn about Verdun and pay their respects. Its site features a cloister, chapel, tower, cinema room and exhibitions, alongside a shop and media resources including photographs, videos and archives. Visitors can find practical information about opening hours, access, admission prices and brochures, and make reservations for group visits; individual visitors do not need to book. The Ossuary also shares news and event information, including memorial ceremonies, and provides links to historical resources that can help people trace soldiers’ military records and burial places.
