## Description

Visual Ancestor is a private library dedicated to helping people discover and preserve historical photographs, particularly images dating from 1840 to 1940. Its searchable collections bring together family photographs, albums, dealer listings, and eligible public-domain images from institutions such as the Library of Congress. Members can search by names and locations, use facial-recognition tools to compare faces across photographs, and request high-resolution copies or original photographs.

The library serves genealogists, collectors, dealers, and people seeking to safeguard family images. Dealers can list antique photographs for sale, while Visual Ancestor also purchases photographs and albums for its collections. Individuals and organizations may contribute pre-1940 photographs and related materials; the library offers digitization and preservation to help protect originals for future generations.

Its holdings and preservation work encompass photographs, albums, stereographs, postcards, and dealer listings, including formats such as tintypes, cartes de visite, cabinet photographs, and real photo postcards. Visual Ancestor also invites ideas and collaboration from people working to locate and preserve ancestral photographs.
